Five midfielders that Manchester United could sign! Manchester United were heavily linked with a host of central midfielders in the summer. The likes of Thomas Partey, Bruno Fernandes, Frenkie de Jong, Christian Eriksen & Mario Lemina were all heavily linked with moves to Old Trafford, but none of them materialised and Manchester United went into the season with limited options in central midfield which has caused issues.
With the January transfer window fast approaching, speculation is beginning to hot up again and today we’re taking a look at who Manchester United could look to bring in. Bruno Fernandes, who was heavily linked right up until deadline day, would be an obvious and sensible choice. The dynamic Portugese midfielder does his best work in the final third and has raised-eyebrows with his outrageous goalscoring record. However, he’s also a more than willing and able defensive contributor who would suit the brand of high-pressing, aggressive football that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants his Manchester United team to play.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was another name heavily linked to Manchester United and he’s somebody that would make a lot of sense for Manchester United. The Lazio central midfielder is physically dominant, a progressive passer and also able to contribute impressive shot + key pass numbers.
The other trio of suggestions all come from the Premier League. Tireless Scotsman John McGinn of Aston Villa could be a very astute signing for Manchester United. Jack Grealish often takes the plaudits when things are going well at Villa Park, but McGinn is often just as important in the centre of the park - he’s already been directly involved in 4 goals in his first 8 Premier League appearances. Christian Eriksen, who seems poised to move regardless of Man Utd interest, could be an option for Solskjaer’s side. Eriksen is largely considered one of the best and most creative midfielders in the Premier League - and the stats would back this idea up. Eriksen, who probably has five or so years left at the top of his game, is on 61 Premier League assists. That’s more than the likes of Mesut Ozil, Paul Scholes and Gianfranco Zola. Eriksen is a consistent creative presence in the final third or from deep and this is something that the current Manchester United side are crying out for!
Our final suggestion for this video is of course the best creative midfielder in the Premier League according to the stats, James Maddison. The Leicester City man is not only a quantifiable elite playmaker but he is also a Manchester United fan who will undoubtedly give everything for the club. Maddison was the league’s top creator last season with 100 chances created - piping the likes of Raheem Sterling, Eden Hazard and the aforementioned Christian Eriksen to the post
In terms of the league’s playmaker.
