Does Bruno Fernandes Fix Man Utd’s Creative Problems? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man United have been heavily linked with the signing of Bruno Fernarnandes in the January transfer window. Let’s have a look at what difference the signing of Bruno Fernandes would make at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes has been firmly in the transfer spotlight since the end of last season, when he not only lifted the Nations League with Portugal, but set the record for the most goals scored in a single season from midfield, with an incredible 32 goals in all competitions.

In the summer it seemed he was set to make a move to one of the Premier League big boys with both Manchester clubs leading the chase and Spurs making a late 70 million euro bid. However, despite this, he didn’t make the move and even signed a contract extensions which boosted his release clause to around 80 or 90 million pounds.

The Portugese international would certainly address the big problem of lack of creativity at Manchester United.

Bruno Fernarnandes has created 3.7 chances per game for Sporting Lisbon in the Liga NOS. Man United’s best chance creator per game in the Premier League is World Cup winning Frenchman Paul Pogba at 2.3, meaning Bruno Fernandes is creating 1.4 more chances than Manchester United’s current best.

Bringing in just one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe still won’t be enough. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man Utd will have to get the best out of him and a lot of this is down to the system being played.

Solskjaer has favoured the 4-2-3-1 this season, which has been proven to work well in some of the bigger games, including against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Etihad and Joe Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have struggled to break teams down in the 4-2-3-1. Bruno could allow Man United to move to a 4-3-3 and still be able to play the 4-2-3-1if needed. Having the 4-3-3 would allow Solskjaer to keep Paul Pogba & Bruno Fernandes as two free eights. This would welcome more consistent creativity for the very much in form attacking line of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Daniel James and Anthony Martial.

Whilst Bruno Fernandes could not only add spark and creativity with the ball, he would still allow Solskær to continue building his high turnover system. Last season, playing as an eight, Fernandes averaged 2.9 tackles per game, winning 58% of them. This season, at number 10, he’s averaging 3.6, winning 67% of them.

Fernandes will not only add the traditional creativity United have been lacking this season, but he won’t break the system, he’ll improve it. Fernandes’ 2.4 successful tackles per game in the league this season would rank him second to only tackling god, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (4.1).

Is Bruno Fernandes the signing Man Utd need in the January transfer window?
