Some Man Utd fans have been calling to see the Dutchman start consistently in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United XI since he joined from Ajax. Since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer of 2020, Donny van de Beek has found it difficult to force his way into the first eleven mainly because he’s competing with the best number 10 in Europe right now, Bruno Fernandes.

For Ajax, van de Beek largely played in Bruno’s position so it’s no surprise that he’s found it difficult to displace the man who has been incredible since joining Manchester United. Because of this Donny’s mainly been used as an option off the bench but he’s still managed to influence games despite averaging just 14.6 minutes per Premier League appearance during his first season. He scored with his first shot in a United shirt & within 10 minutes of coming on against Arsenal, he came the closest to equalising when he forced Elneny to hit his own post.

In this deeper position, Van de Beek finds himself with time and space to orchestrate United’s build up. And this is something that’s massively lacking from United’s midfield which can force Bruno Fernandes to drop deep to organise. But with Donny in this deeper position, it allows Bruno to stay higher up the pitch where he can better influence the scoreline.
