The Funchal Passenger Ropeway connects the old town of Funchal (Madeira, Portugal) Monte, in about 15 minutes, with a panoramic view of the city along the way. It consists of 42 8-seater cabins each, moved by a type gondola monocable detachable clip system.
The construction of Funchal-Monte Cable Car began in September 1999 and was opened in November 2000; the route was designed with the aim of recovering the tourist role of the Monte train, existing in 1887-1943.
The cable is 3178 m long and 43 mm thick, and is based on metal towers bevel 11 which maintain a distance of 5.5 m between the two branches of the cable, some implemented in full urban fabric. The largest span is 550 m, between the towers 3 (the highest, with 39 m) and 4, with the distanced cable branches exceptionally 6.5 m from each other. The engine located at the base station has a power of 302 kW.
The base station is in the Almirante Reis garden, in the historic part of Funchal, with the top on Monte, midway between Largo das Babosas and Monte Gardens. This site has pedestrian correspondence with the top terminal of the Botanical Garden cable car and not far from the Monte railway station, extinct in 1943.
