Portugal vs Spain at the 2018 World Cup was pure football cinema from the opening whistle. In one of the most anticipated games of the group stage, Cristiano Ronaldo won and converted a penalty inside the opening four minutes to give Portugal the lead. Spain eventually fought back through Diego Costa, but Ronaldo answered again just before halftime, catching David de Gea off guard with a low shot to put Portugal back in front. It was already shaping up to be an incredible match, but neither team was anywhere close to finished.

Spain came out flying in the second half and completely changed the momentum. Diego Costa scored his second goal to bring Spain level before Nacho produced a ridiculous strike from outside the box that put Spain ahead 3-2. Portugal suddenly found themselves trailing against one of the strongest teams in the tournament, and Spain looked ready to take all three points. But Ronaldo had other plans. With Portugal needing a moment of brilliance, he won a free kick just outside the box in the 88th minute and stepped up with the entire stadium watching.

Then came one of the most iconic moments of the tournament. Ronaldo curled the free kick over the wall and into the top corner, completing his hat trick and rescuing a 3-3 draw for Portugal. It was his first ever World Cup hat trick, and he had done it against Spain, one of the tournament favourites, while carrying Portugal through a game that constantly swung back and forth. Three goals, including a last-minute free kick, against one of the best teams in the world on the biggest stage. This wasn't just a great Ronaldo performance, it was one of those World Cup games that instantly became football history.
