Today we’re going to be taking a look at Greenwood, Martial & Rashford as Manchester United’s new front three, in Tactics Explained!

Since the Premier League restarted Manchester United have been in fine form, with no team picking up more points in that time than Solskjær’s men. The return of Paul Pogba and the addition of Bruno Fernandes has given United greater control of matches, allowing them to dominate possession and break teams down rather than concede possession and play on the counter attack like we saw before February.

The starting front three at the time from left to right was Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Dan James. In their roles, Marcus Rashford was a flexible inside forward or inverted winger, depending on the situation, Anthony Martial a deep-lying forward and Dan James as a traditional winger, or alternatively, if Juan Mata was given the nod, he’d operate as a playmaker. But the new front 3 has just a single change on the right with Mason Greenwood forcing his way in.

Anthony Martial has really hit a new level with the arrival of Bruno Fernandes. A forward thinking number 10 who’s first thought is play forward and get the attackers into goal scoring positions. Since Bruno’s Premier League debut, Anthony Martial has scored more goals than any other player in the league.

Since the restart Marcus Rashford hasn’t really been in the spotlight, with Martial’s hat-trick, Bruno and Pogba’s link up and now Mason Greenwood’s emergence pushing the winger out of the headlines. But that’s not to say he’s been poor. With the addition of Greenwood into the side, a pure goalscorer, Rashford has adapted his game to become far more creative, which shows the range of his ability.

But Rashford and Martial were mainstays in the side prior to the break. The real player we have to talk about is Mason Greenwood.
The youngster has had an unbelievable breakout season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions for the senior side. Whilst he made his name in the youth setup as a centre forward, he’s adapted to first team football as a right winger and with 9 goals and 2 assists in just 9 starts from there, he’s definitely earned a crack at making the position his own.
Mason has the potential to be a special footballer. He’d already shown glimpses of his potential this season but he’s upped it since the restart.
