Messi and Ronaldo have been involved in 4 World Cup tournaments each. Messi went to his first one as a reserve player. Back in the days Leo was only 18 years old. At the tournament, the youngster participated in 3 out of 5 matches, and was able to score a goal and deliver an assist against Serbia and Montenegro. This squad of Argentina national team came to the quarter final and was stopped after losing to Germany in a penalty shootout.

In 2010, Leo already went to the tournament in the status of a world star! The team was coached by the great Diego Maradona! The Argentines took first place in the group and passed Mexico in the Round of 16, but as soon as they came across a top opponent, they were defeated by Germany with a score of 4: 0 ... Messi didn’t score a single goal, having been noted with 3 assists!

Both individually and in terms of result, the 2014 World Cup was the brightest tournament for Leo as a captain. The 2018 World Cup did not work for the better either. Fernando Santos' players did leave the group, but they lost to Uruguay in the first leg of the playoffs afterwards. It was the best result for Cristiano: he scored a hat-trick against the Spaniards and a goal while battling Morocco.

What do we end up with? Compared exclusively to the World Cup tournaments, Lionel Messi seems superior to Cristiano Ronaldo. In terms of team results, Messi succeeded in reaching the final once, while Cristiano's best achievement is the semi-final stage. If we compare the scoring actions, Messi netted 6 goals and provided 7 assists in 19 appearances, and Ronaldo netted 6 goals and provided 1 assist in 17 appearances. Therefore, the point goes to Leo!
