There’s no doubt about it: Jude Bellingham is one of the very best young footballers in Europe today. After signing for Borussia Dortmund from boyhood club Birmingham City in the summer of 2020, he’s gone from strength to strength, clocking up around 2,400 minutes in his first season at the Westfalenstadion, putting in standout performances in the Champions League knock-out stages, and becoming a regular fixture in the England squad before his 18th birthday.

Now in his second campaign in Germany, he isn’t letting up, with the club so confident of his abilities in midfield that they were willing to sanction the sale of the experienced Thomas Delaney to Sevilla. But it could have been very different – back in 2020, he had the option of joining Manchester United, with the Premier League giants putting in a huge effort to lure him to Old Trafford.
