In today’s video we’ll be taking a look at how Manchester United WILL BEAT Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur.
With the Premier League back, Manchester United return to action to face former coach Jose Mourinho’s Spurs on Friday night.
If United want to finish in the top four this is a must win game, so we’re going to take a look at how Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men can do so!
The last game between the sides saw a Marcus Rashford masterclass! The Prime Minister-to-be not only scored both of United’s goals, but his all-round performance was excellent as he isolated himself one v one with Serge Aurier. However, the number 10 was supported by a couple of key positions. Much of United’s ball progression was left to the double pivot, Fred and Scott McTominay whilst Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard mainly moved laterally in search of space between the lines, especially towards the left and Rashford.
Because Jose Mourinho set Spurs up in his favourite 4-2-3-1, much of the same weaknesses will be present so United could adopt a similar approach and get a similar result. Basically, the problem with Mourinho’s system is that there’s often a lot of space between the pivot and defence as the midfield looks to be in a position to support the front four in the press.
Combine that with a pacey opposition front line to pin the defence and that gap either becomes huge, or the press will drop off to try to reduce this gap.
In either situation, United can gain an advantage.
Either the ball playing defenders get more time on the ball to pick a line breaking pass or the number 10 can drift into space, or the centre forward can drop off the line where they can receive.
The striker will be Anthony Martial. The Frenchman has stepped up his level massively this season, not only equalling his best goal scoring season in his career but operating effectively with his back to goal and linking with teammates - something that will be needed in this game.
But the number 10 will be equally important.
In the previous game, Jesse Lingard performed well, not only creating the most chances on the pitch but as many as the entire Spurs starting eleven combined! Yet, as Jesse Lingard performed, that position now belongs to Bruno Fernandes and if Spurs offer Bruno the same space they offered Jesse then it’ll be a long night!
Not only does Bruno love to drift laterally to look for space to operate in, especially when the central zones are blocked off like we saw in United’s 3-0 win against Watford, but he’s got the ability to consistently create chances, as no Manchester United player has created as many chances since his debut than Bruno Fernandes, who created 11.
The other part of the midfield selection is the pivot. Fred and McTominay performed excellently last time they faced Spurs, screening the back four and reducing the threat Spurs posed in negative transitions or on the counter attack, but also playing those penetrative forward passes.
Their energy and aggression is a must, especially in these bigger games so I’d keep Paul Pogba in reserve.
Not only does this pivot give more solidity, which without the ball, can allow the forwards to stay higher up the pitch and become a greater counter attacking threat, but they’ve built a good, working relationship with Bruno Fernandes. Being able to call on Pogba from the bench also gives Solskjær a truly game changing option which could be crucial if Mourinho parks his bus.
Now that Marcus Rashford is available for selection again it’s imperative that he gets the start.
Rashford’s direct dribbling and non-stop movement will cause Aurier problems all evening, and United should look to exploit that match up as often as possible.
In conclusion, Manchester United must implement all of these aspects to beat Spurs.
