After more than two years of talks between Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, the Red Devil’s move for Jadon Sancho finally seems to be progressing. With his contract expiring in two years time, Dortmund are open to the sale and there are reports that the clubs are finalising an 80 million pound move, so if Manchester United were to sign Jadon Sancho, would he fix their problem on the right wing?

The 20/21 Bundesliga was Sancho’s first full season where he played more games on the left (11) than the right (10) but don’t worry, he would often switch flanks in game anyway and is completely comfortable on either side of the pitch. For Manchester United, whilst he might start on the right hand side I’d expect a fluid attacking unit, with at least the wingers interchanging positions, if not the full front four.

So in short, Sancho would fix this issue on the right wing but he’d also fix so much more.
The Dortmund man is such a special footballer because he improves the players around him. During his time at Dortmund he’s linked with all his teammates but he’s formed excellent partnerships with a number 10 and the full backs. At Manchester United this could get Bruno Fernandes even more involved but most importantly, it could improve Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s attacking play. The right back has struggled to form an understanding with the winger ahead of him because the player is constantly changing and no player in the United first team can count the right wing as their most comfortable position.

And if Sancho was to play off the left wing for whatever reason, he’d still form a partnership with left back, Luke Shaw. Like when he’s on the right, Sancho holds his width on the left flank but also cuts inside. This is a lot like Marcus Rashford who has developed an excellent understanding with Shaw. Sancho could do something similar with the left back and his preference to receive wide would open that favoured inside channel for Shaw to move into. This season at Dortmund he’s built on his relationship with Raphael Guerreiro who assisted him 4 times, the most frequent assistor Sancho had.
Do you think Jadon Sancho will be enough to fix Man Utd’s long term problems at right-wing?
