On 23 April 2003, Manchester United beat Real Madrid 4–3 at Old Trafford in an unforgettable Champions League quarter-final second leg. Ronaldo Nazário put Madrid ahead in the 12th minute, before Ruud van Nistelrooy equalised in the 43rd. Ronaldo then scored twice more in the 50th and 59th minutes to complete his hat-trick. United fought back through an Iván Helguera own goal (52’) and two late David Beckham goals (71’, 85’), but Madrid still advanced 6–5 on aggregate. Ronaldo received a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd when he was substituted.
