Greenwood has found his goal scoring form again over the past two months - After a blistering start to his Manchester United career in the second half of the 2019/20 season, Mason Greenwood - for the first time in his career - went through a bit of a goal drought and he even underperformed his xG earlier this season.

Now that we’re seeing Mason Greenwood back to his best, scoring vs. Roma, Spurs, Villa and Brighton in some of Man United’s biggest fixtures so far this season. We take a look at where Greenwood should be deployed in Solskjaer’s side next season and long term role at the club.
Since Greenwood has emerged as a starter at Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has largely set his side up in a 4-2-3-1, with the club legend occasionally using split striker systems. Ole’s Plan A leaves room for just one centre forward in the starting eleven - which is the position that Greenwood made his own at every youth level. But given the physicality and intensity of the Premier League, that position is arguably the most difficult to hold down for a young player finding their feet. Because of this, Greenwood has played the majority of his Manchester United minutes on the right wing. From this position Mason only has one man marker, the opposition left back, and he has the freedom to hit the byline on his right foot or cut inside and go for goal, with him usually favouring the latter.

Once he’s grown a bit in stature and put on a bit of muscle, he’ll be more than capable of leading the line in Ole’s 4-2-3-1. His exposure to playing in different positions will make him an ideal, modern day centre forward who can interchange with teammates in the attacking unit. When he first burst on the scene he was compared to Robin van Persie who improved his game under Arsene Wenger, with the Frenchman playing him all across the line in his early years before he fully settled in as a lone forward but when he did, his game was fully rounded out - and I expect Mason to follow a similar path, especially being coached by Solskjaer.
