STORYLINE:
Portugal fans were in high spirits in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday morning, ahead of their team's football World Cup opening match against Ivory Coast.
The teams play in Group G, which also contains five-times champions Brazil, one of the strongest sides in the tournament.
But the fans were in an optimistic mood.
"We are going to win, Cristiano Ronaldo will score the first goal. Viva Portugal forever!" said 37-year-old Rui Gouveia, a Portuguese football team supporter who lives in Johannesburg.
The Portugal team only arrived in Port Elizabeth late on Monday morning and the outfield players started training immediately.
Amongst them was Cristiano Ronaldo, who will lead Portugal's attack, and will be aiming to end an eight-game run without a goal for the national side.
Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz was making sure his team was ready to possibly play against the formidable Didier Drogba, even though the Ivory Coast striker might not be playing in Tuesday's match.
Drogba trained for a second straight day on Monday, just 10 days after breaking his arm in a June 4 warm-up match, and Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is waiting until just two hours before kick-off to make a decision on whether he will play.
Drogba, who scored 37 goals this season for London football team Chelsea, taking the club to the Premier League and FA Cup titles, was hoping to take to the field at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium wearing a special protective cast.
FIFA said on Tuesday that Didier Drogba had been cleared to play whilst wearing the cast, following an examination by match referee Jorge Larrionda of Uruguay, and Portuguese team officials.
Whether or not Drogba starts the match, he remains Ivory Coast's most likely source of goals in a tough Group G that also contains five-time world champion Brazil and North Korea.
Ivory Coast is among Africa's best hopes for a second-round berth, invigorated by the arrival of Eriksson, who took England to the World Cup quarterfinals in 2002 and 2006.
In its World Cup debut four years ago, Ivory Coast opened with a 2-1 loss to two-time champion Argentina.
It then lost by the same score to the Netherlands before rallying with a 3-2 win over Serbia and Montenegro, which restored some pride but was not enough to take it into the next round.
Eriksson's last two appearances at major tournaments both ended with defeat to Portugal in a penalty shootout, but the Swede said that he would not take any personal satisfaction from a victory on Tuesday despite his setbacks with England.
