Portugal's friendly with Angola was abandoned amid chaotic scenes in Lisbon this evening after the visitors had four players sent off.

In a fractious clash at the Alvalade stadium, Portugal eased into a 5-1 lead, having conceded in the opening minute, as the red mist descended in front of the Angola players.

The game was eventually abandoned after 67 minutes when Helver Vicente went down injured with Angola already down to seven men and having used all their substitutes.

Tempers began to fray 12 minutes in, with the Angola players angered that Yamba Asha was given a yellow card for a clash with Portugal's Bordeaux striker Pauleta.

Four minutes later Asha was the first to see red for a series of horrific tackles as the game spiralled out of control.

Portugal won a penalty and the chance to equalise Pedro Mendonca's opener when Franklim Manuel lunged dangerously at Joao Pinto in the box.

By the time Luis Figo slotted in the penalty, Franklim had been shown a red card and Estrela Wilson, his club-mate at Belenses, soon followed for arguing.

He was shown two yellow cards inside 20 seconds to leave Angola with just eight men after 26 minutes.

Nuno Gomes and Jorge Andrade struck before the interval to give Portugal a 3-1 advantage.

Angola coach Mario Calado then made a substitution at half time and six more after 51 minutes, by which time Fulham's Luis Boa Morte had made it 4-1 to Portugal.

The visitors then appeared intent on having the game abandoned with a number of them making a conscious effort to approach and antagonise the referee.

Angola made their final substitution just after the hour, three minutes before Antonio Neto was the fourth player sent off, for a late challenge on Joao Tomas.

Gomes then scored his second and Portugal's fifth before Vicente collapsed to the ground complaining of an injury.

He was taken from the field and, with Angola having no substitutes left and only six players left on the field, the game was abandoned.
