The tragic fate of the Netherlands. Being one of the leading teams at Euro 2012, the team coached by Bert Van Marwijk was actually eliminated in the group stage. After suffering three defeats, the Netherlands is the bottom team in Group B, which also includes Germany, Denmark and Portugal.
In their last match against Portugal, at Metalist Stadium, Monday (18/6/2012) early morning WIB, the Netherlands again lost 2-1 to Cristiano Ronaldo Cs. Portugal's two leading goals were scored by Ronaldo, while the only Dutch goal was scored by Rafael Van Der Vaart.
The Netherlands actually started the match well. They even took an early lead 1-0 through Van Der Vaart's goal in the 11th minute. Using Arjen Robben's pass, Van der Vaart fired a left foot shot which sent the ball flying into the bottom right corner of Rui Patricio's goal.
Portugal then responded to the goal through Cristiano Ronaldo's kick in the 28th minute. After controlling Joao Pereira's through ball which Jetro Willems failed to block, Ronaldo dribbled the ball into the penalty box. Even though he was guarded by Ron Vlaar, Ronaldo was still able to kick the ball into Maarten Stekelenburg's goal. The 1-1 score lasted until the end of the first half.
In the second half, Portugal took a 2-1 lead, again through a goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo in the 74th minute. The goal came from a quick attack from a Portuguese player.
Initially, Wesley Sneijder passed the ball incorrectly and it fell at the Portuguese player's feet. The Selecao players then launched a quick counterattack led by Ronaldo and Nani.
From the left side of the Dutch defense, Nani released a through ball which was met by Ronaldo. The Real Madrid striker then outwitted the Dutch defender and then beat goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to make the score 2-1. This 2-1 score lasted until the end of the match.
With this result, Portugal qualified for the top 8 round alongside Germany who won the group. Meanwhile, the Netherlands had to go home with three defeats.
