Portugal weren’t expecting to be here, only getting in to this tournament following FIFA’s decision to ban Russia - against whom they lost their qualification play-off - due to the war in Ukraine. That means they get a chance to better their 2017 debut effort in which they failed to negotiate the group stage, and they enter in good form as they’re unbeaten in four games (W3, D1) including a creditable 1-1 draw with Australia last time out.

All three of those victories came with a clean sheet as Francisco Neto’s side lived up to their reputation of being hard to break down, and given they missed out on the knockouts five years ago on head-to-head goal difference, they won’t need reminding about the importance of defending well. Portugal can’t be discounted as an attacking threat either, particularly as they’ve scored in all five previous H2Hs (W2, L3).

It would be no surprise if that run continued as Switzerland are yet to win in 2022 (D2, L4) and haven’t scored a first-half goal since November 2021! They qualified via a penalty shootout after drawing their two-legged play-off against the Czech Republic and as none of their Euro 2017 games were decided by a more than a one-goal margin (W1, D1, L1), a cagey opener could be on the cards.

Although Switzerland have limited major tournament experience, their coach Nils Nielsen does, as he impressively led unfancied Denmark to the final back in 2017. They’ll lean heavily on his expertise as like Portugal, that competition saw the Swiss make their European finals debut and exit at the first hurdle.

Players to watch: Maritimo forward Telma Encarnação has scored in two of her last four appearances for Portugal, while each of Switzerland midfielder Coumba Sow’s last five international goals arrived before half-time.

Hot stat: Five of Switzerland’s last six games saw more goals scored after half-time than before.
