In today’s video we’re talking about a hot debate going on right now in regards to who should be starting for Manchester United in goal next season, Dean Henderson or David de Gea?

David de Gea has seemingly struggled to find his best form since the start of the 2018/19 season, with no player making more errors that have led to goals than the Spaniard in that period and that doesn’t include Steven Bergwijn’s goal in the recent 1-1 draw! Whether this is a blip in form or a more permanent issue remains to be seen, but waiting in the wings is a fantastic young goalkeeper in Dean Henderson. With 11 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, Henderson is not only outperforming De Gea, but most other keepers, with no one keeping more clean sheets in the competition than the 23 year old.


Stylistically, Henderson is similar to Spanish international David de Gea. He’s a well rounded, goal line keeper. Not just with quick reactions and strong wrists that allow him to stop quick snap shots but also parry the ball out of the danger area.
He’s also extremely tenacious and we’ve seen him make flurries of saves, notably that triple save against Norwich City where he saved a shot that was expected to have been scored 92 times out of 100, basically a guaranteed goal.

When facing crossing situations, Henderson tends to stay on his line and lean on his quick reactions to stop the resulting shot, rather than stopping the source by claiming the cross like say Thibaut Courtois would. But when Henderson is in one v one situations, he doesn’t normally rush the attacker, instead staying big and giving himself more time to react, often saving shots with his feet. An unusual technique that’s associated with his Spanish counterpart. However Henderson isn’t a perfect goalkeeper. There are a few weaknesses to his game, but at 23, he’s relatively young for a goalkeeper so has plenty of time to improve.
Whilst Henderson is good at saving shots from long range that are aimed high, he can get caught out with low drives. But his biggest area to improve is in possession, especially if he wants to play at the top level of European football.
