Ratcliffe and his company INEOS are expected to run Manchester United's football operations as part of the deal to purchase 25 per cent, which could be the first step in a phased takeover.

He initially wanted to buy all of the Glazers' 67 per cent shareholding.

It's also been reported that Ineos will explore how to expand a rebuilt Old Trafford into a 90,000-seat stadium if Sir Jim Ratcliffe is successful with his offer to buy a stake in Manchester United.

The board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, although the final details of Jim Ratcliffe's offer must first be approved by the six Glazers, who will then put it to a vote.

Jim Ratcliffe wants immediate control over sporting decisions and is proposing a new structure in which INEOS representatives sit on the board, allowing them to exert influence on these matters. The exact nature of this arrangement has yet to be defined.

Jim Ratcliffe is not concerned about immediate control of United's business arm, but he has negotiated the mechanism to eventually purchase the majority of shares and complete a complete takeover.
