Spain snatched a dramatic, last-gasp 1-0 victory over rivals Portugal in their high-stakes 2026 World Cup Round of 16 Iberian Derby at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington to advance to the quarterfinals. La Roja controlled the tactical narrative for long stretches, commanding 55% possession and weaponizing Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo to slice open the defense. However, Portugal’s disciplined backline, anchored by Rúben Dias and goalkeeper Diogo Costa, repeatedly frustrated Luis de la Fuente’s side, while Nuno Mendes agonisingly rattled the crossbar in the first half. The attritional battle seemed destined for extra time until a tactical masterstroke by the Spanish manager broke the deadlock in the 90+1 minute. Substitute Ferran Torres driving down the flank slipped a perfect through-ball to fellow substitute Mikel Merino, who coolly slotted a low left-footed finish past a stranded Costa into the bottom corner. A frantic Portugal threw everything forward in the dying seconds, but a diving João Neves header went agonizingly wide, sealing a heartbreaking elimination that brought a curtain down on the legendary 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup career appearance.
