The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Andrew Thorburn's resignation just one day after taking on the top job at Essendon Football Club is a "dark and grave moment in Australian culture”.

Former banking boss Andrew Thorburn has accused the media and community leaders of judging him based on his faith.

“I think this is a very gravely disturbing moment in the cultural history of Australia Essendon football club has effectively declared itself an anti-Christian organization,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News Australia.

Mr Sheridan said Essendon says it's against the law to ask someone about their “religious beliefs”.

“But it’s within the law to sack someone for having traditional Christian religious beliefs.”
