What Manchester United Need to do to Finish in the Top Four. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United are currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table, but after becoming the first side to stop Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool sides 100% league winning streak this season - if the Red Devil’s make a couple of tactical changes and spend in the January transfer window, we could see Ole’s Man United come up the table and challenge for the top four.

First thing the Norweigan coach will have to do is have side adapt to different systems. Solskjaer has mainly set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 this season, something that he tried and could say was successful in preseason, but with injuries and a lack of squad Ole might need to move to have his side adapt to other systems. Solskjaer experimented with both a 4-4-2 diamond and a back three with a variety of attacking shapes.

Going forward Man Utd seem to perform better with a front two, but with Anthony Martial & Marcus Rashford both facing fitness issues at times this season and 18 year old Mason Greenwood being the only other recognised striker, Man United will have to dip into the market for a striker and specifically more of a target man. The obvious target man is Mario Mandzukic the Juventus striker would be a great signing for United as a second option. The Croatian international stands at six foot three and has largely played as a back to goal striker, an option for his teammates to fire the ball into where he can use his size and strength to hold off defenders whilst his team advance up the pitch before he can bring others into play - Impressively he’s played in the Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A and he’s always scored goals, across those top leagues he’s averaged at least a direct goal involvement every other game which is especially impressive considering he’s often been second choice at Juventus.

The second area of the pitch where Manchester United could go into the market for is the holding midfield position. Whilst Scott Mctominay has impressed Solskjaer’s is left with a lack of depth to partner the Scottsman and with Europa League games coming midweek the likes of Jimmy Garner could be used in those competitions whilst a new experienced singing would step straight into the side.Ruben Neves would be an excellent signing as a holding midfielder that already plays in a 3-5-2 for Wolves and a back four system for Portugal that both play a form of direct wing play, with Neves key in his quick switches of play but Wolves wouldn’t be keen to let him leave in January and he’d probably cost more than 100 million pounds.

Reintegrating Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial into the starting eleven would be the final thing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to do to have Man United challenge for a top four place. Without question Pogba and Martial improve United’s team with their creativity and eye for goal and it’s no surprise that Man United’s xG per Premier League game has dropped by 0.72 without the pair in the starting eleven.

Can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United make top four?
