Gary Neville has recalled how Sir Alex Ferguson called a meeting between Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney on the first day of pre-season after the forward’s sending off at the 2006 World Cup.
Rooney was sent off in the second half of the quarter-final tie by referee Horacio Elizondo after a clash with Ricardo Carvalho.
Ronaldo was one of the many Portuguese players who successfully attempted to persuade the referee to hand Rooney a red card.
And after the red card, Ronaldo was seen winking at Portugal’s bench, in a move that sparked outrage across England.
