Welcome back! Despite an underwhelming response from Manchester United fans, Ralf Rangnick has started well as interim manager, picking up 6 wins from his opening 10 matches and losing just once. But with the transfer window shut for the season it gives us a great opportunity to talk about how the Professor will approach the latter stages of the campaign. So join me today as I discuss what you should expect from Ralf Rangnick’s Man Utd for the rest of the 21/22 season.

After trailing a 4-triple-2 in his early games, Ralf Rangnick has found greater control and balance with a 4-3-3 that uses a back to goal striker that drops off the line, resembling a 4-4-2 diamond at times. This shape doesn’t just work for Rangnick but it suits United’s squad too, allowing them to field two creative midfielders and three forwards.
In terms of personnel, expect Alex Telles and Diogo Dalot to be the first choice full backs.
The duo are well suited to Rangnick’s intense style of play, with both very active defenders and ready to step up to join the press, meanwhile in possession, Dalot and Telles are very good ball players capable of playing progressive passes in the build up but also, in the final third, the pair offer a more reliable threat than Shaw and Wan-Bissaka. Of the full backs, Dalot has been the standout under Rangnick and is starting to show the potential that Jose Mourinho highlighted when he signed him in 2018. For the rest of the season expect more creativity from these players as they look to create more chances for Cristiano Ronaldo.

In midfield, there's no chance of signing a holding midfielder until the summer so Rangnick will have to work with what’s already at the club. This could see a new look midfield three of Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes & Paul Pogba. This will be the first time since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s caretaker spell that Pogba will be playing in a 4-3-3 and it’s well known that’s how to get the best out of the Frenchman. Rangnick’s structured system could also help Pogba with clear on-field instructions, getting the best out of the midfielder. Along with Bruno Fernandes, this duo could provide the greater control that Rangnick has searched for at Old Trafford whilst McTominay’s mobility and ball winning skills anchor the midfield.
And finally we have to talk about the forwards. With the January departures, the fat has been trimmed from the forward options and there’s a clear star trio: Cristiano Ronaldo as the back to goal striker, Marcus Rashford as an inside forward and Jadon Sancho as an inverted winger. Not only is this the most talented trio on paper, but it’s got the best balance with a pure creator in Sancho, a pure goalscorer in Ronaldo and a hybrid in Rashford. With less players to work with I think we’ll see Rangnick’s Manchester United get better as the season goes on whilst fewer senior players means more opportunities for the academy graduates so expect to see the likes of Hannibal Mejbri, Zidane Iqbal and Kobbie Mainoo getting more opportunities to showcase their skills under Ralf Rangnick.
