The difference Bruno Fernandes has had on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United has been magnificent. The Portugese midfielder has already been directly involved in three Premier League goals in just three starts in the league.
The much anticipated arrival of Bruno Fernandes has sparked Manchester United into life as they go in search of securing Champions League football for next season, after a stop start campaign hindered by long term injuries to key players including Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford.
Bruno Fernandes’ performance off the bench against Club Brugge was an example of the influence he’s had on this Man United team. Fernandes managed four shots in just 15 minutes of football in the Europa league for Man Utd last Thursday night, more than any other player on the pitch and again showcasing his productivity around the area.
What was most impressive about the game against Watford was his intelligence. Watford’s defensive midfielders, Hughes and Capoue screened the back four well and there wasn’t space centrally for Fernandes to pick up the ball. As this became apparent Bruno started to drift wider to pick up possession where he could influence the game more, and this is reflected in the stats. In the first 30 minutes of the game, Fernandes had 26 touches, with only Martial, Greenwood and Wan-Bissaka having fewer. However from the 31st minute onwards when he moved wider, Fernandes had 59 touches, with only Maguire having more touches. Shockingly, all three of United’s goals came after Fernandes saw most of the ball, with Fernandes having a hand in all three but it was the first and third where his wide positioning was devastating.
Since making his Premier League debut against Wolves, Bruno Fernandes has averaged an impressive nine passes into the box per game, showing how much of a threat he has been around the area. Bruno Fernandes’ arrival from Sporting Lisbon has clearly rubbed off on his Manchester United teammates already, Anthony Martial has scored in 3/4 in all competitions, since the Portuguese creator joined Man United.
Will Bruno Fernandes be the difference for Manchester United making top four?
