19 year old Erling Braut Haaland has taken the UEFA Champions League by storm this season scoring eight goals in his first five games of the competition’s group stage. We’ll be looking at why Manchester United should be activating Haaland’s £17m release clause this coming transfer window.
Rumours suggest that Haaland has already plotted out his career path, wanting to take steps up the football pyramid rather than jumping directly to the top. Therefore, this rules out some of Europe’s biggest teams. Manchester City play a one striker system and already have Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus. Juventus have Ronaldo, Dybala, Higuain and Mario Mandzukic fighting it out to be the one to lead the line. In addition, Bayern Munich have Robert Lewandowski, who’s missed just five games since 2015, he’s in the form of his life, with Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry both capable backups.
Haaland’s playing style is of an advanced forward that presses opposition, looks to get in behind defenders, runs the channels and scores goals. This rules out teams like Barcelona, who have Griezmann, Suarez and Messi as striker options but play with a forward that drops off the line, so Haaland doesn’t fit the system. Liverpool play with Firmino up top, who is the ultimate false 9. Firmino doesn’t play up front, they have Divock Origi, Mane and Salah capable of stepping in to fulfill the advanced forward role. If Jurgen Klopp’s side were to sign a striker, it would more likely be Kai Havertz rather than Haaland.
German newspaper BILD, who reported that Haaland had this release clause, have strongly suggested that Borussia Dortmund are heavy favourites to sign the striker, which would be a good move. Another equally likely move is RB Leipzig. Three of the best under 21 defensive talents in world football play for Leipzig in Upamecano, Konate and Mukiele. Under Nagelsmann, Leipzig play a variety of systems that tend to involve two strikers, either as a pair or with a wide forward, roles Haaland has played for Salzburg.
A smart move for Erling Haaland would be to join Manchester United. Although his father, and former footballer Alf-Inge Haaland, may prefer a move to Germany next, Erling could well join his dad’s former coach Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer at Manchester United. Solskjær has shown he’s not afraid to give young players a chance, with United fielding their youngest ever eleven in Europe this season.
Haaland could massively improve Manchester United. The Norwegian has shown to not be too affected by pressure, a trait he would definitely need at Old Trafford. Manchester United are committed to a rebuild, and Erling Braut Haaland could define the success of it.
