Welcome back! Today I dive into why Marcus Rashford is so important to Solskjaer’s Manchester United and how his return could improve the side ahead of a tough run of fixtures against the likes of Leicester City, Atalanta, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Obviously, the return of a player with Rashford’s ability would be a huge boost to any team in the world. Over the past two full seasons, only 6 players in the Premier League have been directly involved in more goals than Marcus Rashford (44) with Trent Alexander-Arnold (26) the only player younger than Rashford in the top 25. The forward is perfectly suited, and thus, is integral to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wing play system that focuses the play down the flanks. To make this system work to its fullest you need outstanding and dynamic wingers and you can definitely describe Rashford like that. His skill set: pace, dribbling ability, creativity and goalscoring make him able to operate as a sort of lone winger - being left high up the pitch as a counter-attacking threat. Even if he’s outnumbered he’s still able to carry and dribble past players to gain yards and lead the counter whilst he’s got the vision and technique to pick out supporting teammates.

However, Rashford isn’t all about raw pace and counter attacking. He’s a very forward thinking player and is usually very positive when he’s on the ball. Direct dribbling is something you expect from him and he doesn’t disappoint. This dribbling adds thrust into United’s attack but Rashford’s passing is very progressive too which can also kick-start their attacking tempo. Without Rashford’s individual brilliance we’ve seen United’s attacks break down and go backwards far too often but with the Wythenshawe winger back in the team, United will look to put the opposition under pressure more frequently. His style of play doesn’t just suit the system either. Prior to his layoff, Rashford had built up exceptional relationships with Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes, two of United’s key players in an attacking sense. Rashford’s understanding with Shaw is excellent and he helps to create space for the full back to overlap or to create from a deeper position. Whilst his relationship with Bruno Fernandes is a match made in heaven, with the Portuguese international often looking for Rashford in behind with passes from deep. His runs in behind also gives Bruno more space in the hole to operate in, freeing him up to play anywhere.

The verticality that Rashford brings also means that teams drop that little bit deeper so they’ve got a chance of catching him. Like with Bruno, this creates more space for his deeper teammates to play in which inevitably makes the opposition’s press less efficient. However, if teams don’t adapt to Rashford and play a high line, United’s deepest players can find him with passes over the top. He’ll also dovetail superbly with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. Sancho and Rashford are both dynamic dribblers but prefer a different end product. Rashford likes to follow up dribbles with shots, whilst Sancho does so with passes however they can both do the other job too.

Marcus Rashford needed to take the time to heal his body and despite playing on with constant injuries for nearly two years has managed to improve whilst putting up very impressive numbers. A fully fit Marcus Rashford in a system that’s tailor made for him is a very exciting proposition.
