Lamine Yamal vs Cristiano Ronaldo! ????????????????????

Spain vs Portugal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 was a battle packed with huge storylines. Lamine Yamal faced one of his childhood idols, Cristiano Ronaldo, while Spain’s midfield battle featured Rodri against Portugal’s Vitinha. But one of the most fascinating individual battles was Lamine Yamal vs Nuno Mendes — a rematch after Mendes had helped Portugal stop Yamal in the previous Nations League final.

Yamal arrived at the World Cup with enormous momentum after a phenomenal season with Barcelona, where he won every available Spanish domestic title. With the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Award also in his sights, this was another opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage.

And Yamal delivered. ⚡

He attacked Nuno Mendes with his dribbling, skill, acceleration and creativity before Mendes was forced off injured and was replaced by Semedo. One of the standout moments came when Yamal received the ball deep inside Spain’s half, close to his own penalty area, then exploded forward, evaded three Portuguese midfielders, and launched a devastating counterattack.

That was Lamine Yamal putting his stamp on the World Cup! ????

Spain eventually sealed a dramatic victory through Mikel Merino’s extra-time goal, and Yamal emerged from the battle with another memorable performance.

With contenders such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Ousmane Dembélé, Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise also chasing football’s biggest individual prizes, Yamal’s World Cup performances could be decisive in the 2026 Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Award race.
