Dele Alli confidently dispatched a penalty on his first run-out for us as we defeated Brentford 2-1 in another behind-closed-doors friendly at Hotspur Way today (Wednesday, July 22).
The energetic midfielder converted our second spot kick of the match in stoppage time, Shaq Coulthirst having scored the first earlier on, before Jermaine Udumaga pulled one back for the Bees with the last kick of the game.
Centre-half Toby Alderweireld also played his first match since joining us from Atletico Madrid in what was our third and final Training Centre friendly before we jet off to Colorado next week for the prestigious MLS All-Stars game.
Alderweireld started the game alongside fellow new boys Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier, with Danny Rose completing the back four, but in truth the defensive quartet was rarely troubled in a first half that was largely one-way traffic.
Our first chance arrived six minutes in when Wimmer picked out Trippier wide on the right, his cross was flicked on by Josh Onomah and Coulthirst produced a low stop from goalkeeper Jack Bonham.
Christian Eriksen then set up Coulthirst whose shot was deflected wide, with the Dane himself curling just beyond the far post after good work by Nathan Oduwa down the left flank a couple of minutes later.
The latter was denied by Bonham on 17 minutes after being played in behind the right full-back by the all-action Nabil Bentaleb before Brentford threatened for the first time when Andre Gray teed up Konstantin Kerschbaumer to curl towards the far post, but goalkeeper Luke McGee got down to his right to keep his effort out.
Trippier was causing the visitors problems with his crossing from the right side and another lofted ball in from the ex-Burnley man found Coulthirst, but his up-and-under header was off-target. Bentaleb then got himself into a shooting position after some tantalising footwork to get around his marker, but saw his curling effort cannon off the upright.
The opening goal arrived from the right boot of Coulthirst in the 25th minute, the young striker finding the bottom corner of the net with a penalty after Oduwa’s penetrating run into the Bees’ area was abruptly halted by Moses Odubajo. Bonham dived the right way but couldn’t keep Coulthirst’s effort out.
Onomah was next to go close, his angled shot being blocked by the keeper, while McGee remained alert at the other end to smother a tricky effort from Jota. The final chance of the half arrived in the 42nd minute as Eriksen saw his low shot pushed around the post by Bonham.
We made wholesale changes at the break with Kyle Walker, Federico Fazio, Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies comprising the back four and Tom Carroll, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli occupying the attacking midfield roles.
Shooting chances were not in such plentiful supply as in the first half, however, with McGee equal to Courtney Senior’s shot from just inside the box eight minutes after the restart as the Bees sought an equaliser.
Dembele forced a save from Bonham when he met Walker’s cross with a solid header at the back post shortly after the hour mark while Chadli’s free-kick following a foul on Alli curled around the wall but was simple for the keeper to gather.
Chadli and Davies both tried shots from the left angle in the closing stages before we were handed a chance to double our lead from the spot as the game entered stoppage time. Dembele sprung Chadli in behind the defence on the left and he squared for Alli, who tried to take the ball around Bonham but was brought down by the Bees’ keeper as he did so.
Alli dusted himself down to smash the resulting spot kick into the top corner, scoring what proved to be a key goal in light of what was to follow. After a 93rd-minute corner, Brentford’s Nico Yennaris sent the ball into a crowded six-yard box and Udumaga was able to turn the ball home to make it 2-1 with the last kick of the game.
