Manchester United have completed the signing of one of the best defenders in world football in Varane, joining Jadon Sancho through the door this summer and adding extra quality to this Man United side. So how does Varane make Solskjaer’s side better?

We recently did a video overviewing how Varane would improve Manchester United and that will be linked above if you want a deeper look but in short: Varane is a very capable aerial defender that should make teams targeting Maguire’s partner much less effective. His aerial ability should also improve United’s ability to both defend set pieces but also to attack from them.

Much like during his time at Real Madrid alongside Sergio Ramos, at Manchester United, Raphael Varane will adopt a cover - stopper partnership with Harry Maguire. This makes excellent use of both defenders' skill sets. Maguire is a physical monster capable of overpowering most attackers whilst Varane is quick enough to catch most forwards. As much as this blend will be important in the transition when United lose possession, with Varane dropping off to cover whilst Maguire steps out to engage, their OVERALL defensive ability will be crucial for United’s counter attacking game.

Both are intelligent defenders with lots of experience who win the majority of their ground AND aerial duels. This will help them to form a rock solid partnership when defending their own box.
Neither have a real weakness to exploit. Varane wins over three quarters of his aerial duels and defends crosses very well whilst Harry Maguire ranks in the top 21% of centre backs in terms of fewest times dribbled past.

I’m genuinely excited to see how Raphael Varane settles in at United. Without a doubt, the Frenchman improves United’s first team in almost every way possible. His cover / stopper partnership with Maguire could be the best in the Premier League. But with another world class defender, Solskjaer will be free to rotate Harry Maguire more. The United skipper is one of the most resilient players in world football and should still play the majority of the minutes available, but being able to rest him knowing that there’s still another world class centre back is a nice option to have. At 28 years old, Raphael Varane is joining Manchester United at arguably the peak of his career and his signing is a statement of intent from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
