How Manchester United could set-up next season, in terms of their starting XI, formation and tactics! Ole Gunnar Solskjaer experimented with many formations in 2018/2019, with the 4-4-2 diamond seemingly being his preference - but 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-3-1-2 also being trialled. It’s not quite clear how Man Utd will play next season, so we’re taking a look at how Manchester United could set up in 2019/2020.
It seems likely that Man Utd will dip back into the transfer market, having already secured the signatures of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the likes of Wissam Ben Yedder, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Neves linked with a move to Manchester United - and it seems that centre back and central midfield are priority positions for the club. With that in mind, it seems fairly likely that we could see Harry Maguire make the switch from The King Power to Old Trafford this summer. Maguire is good on the ball, aerially strong and a very good age to make the step up. He’s also a fairly aggressive defender and should dovetail well with Victor Lindelof, whose strengths are on the cover. If Manchester United do manage to get a deal for the England centre back across the line, I’d expect to see a backline of: Shaw, Lindelof, Maguire. Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the 2019/2020 season.
Moving into midfield, many have suggested that Manchester United need something of an overhaul. The likes of Angel Gomes, Dylan Levitt and James Garner are all arguably ready to step in and make a claim for a starting place in the side - but it’s probably fair to say that Man Utd need to buy at least one midfielder to play 2000+ minutes next season. Ruben Neves would be a very smart buy. The Wolves midfielder massively impressed with his long-range passing in his debut Premier League season - and would be the perfect player to come in and help Man Utd implement more of an identity in-possession. His signature switch out from DM to RWB would massively help Man Utd in progressing the ball through wide areas, too. Bruno Fernandes has been heavily linked over the last couple of weeks - and the Sporting midfielder’s frankly ridiculous goal, assist, shot and key pass numbers make him an obvious candidate for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In terms of the frontline, tweaks seem more likely than wholesale changes. Both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have recently signed long-term deals and look set to play major roles in United’s attack next season - although there’s less clarity about the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku respectively. It seems likely that Mason Greenwood will be viewed as a first team option next season. Perhaps Manchester United could turn to Dani Olmo to play on the right. The young Dinamo Zagreb player would provide some natural width and fits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s “young, hungry” remit for signings. Other names that have been mentioned include the likes of Moussa Dembele and Wissam Ben Yedder.
